Art Practices to Survive Dystopia for Transgender & Gender Expansive Youth
Mission
Transgender and gender non binary young people have used and continue to use artistic expression and imagination to survive dystopic times. Arts practices can provide crucial safe spaces when public policy and acceptance become restricted. This project offers hands-on creative exploration while building community among participants.
My work has always been moving toward understanding, witnessing and standing in awe at what young people carry and how they find the resources and inner strength to survive difficult circumstances. I have had the privilege of working with queer youth at the LGBT Community Center and the Harvey Milk High School, and the Center for Anti-Violence Education, and serve on the Board for Reclaim, MN,

The first 100 people to sign up will receive a free art kits with all of the supplies to complete 3 art projects designed and created by MN trans and non-binary artists. You may also sign up to attend in person or online workshops!
1. Heroes & Avatars with featured artist, Tara Harbo. Tara grew up in a small southern MN farming town. She rediscovered art as she came out as trans, using it to express fears, hopes, and dreams of the woman she would become. She uses illustration, collage, poetry & zine making.
2. Battle Armor - Art as Protection & Power with featured artist, Raleigh. What could be more Minnesotan than seed art?Raleigh's seed-based self-portrait of his chest after top surgery was accepted and shown at the 2026 State Fair.
3. Liminal Spaces: A Home Between Worlds with featured artist Jinzu Main. Jinzu is a queer, trans, and disabled BIPOC artist. Their work includes wearable sculptures and cyanotype printing.
